Isabel Marant AW13 Boot of the Season

March 11, 2013

Trust me on this one - these Isabel Marant boots are THE boot of the AW13 season.  Isabel Marant's AW13 show was nothing short of spectacular during Paris Fashion Week.  I am always a huge fan of her collections but this season was a different cool factor that went down the runway.  A change from her previous collections focusing on all things Americana (ie. cowgirl and Hawaiian), this collection was more European and for me very Parisian chic.

And now, let's talk about these boots.  Every season no matter the shoes, Isabel Marant's wedge heels, ankle booties and velcro-strap sneakers are always backordered or out of stock.  For the AW13 season, I predict will be no different especially with these these boots - a play on her well-known wedge heel and velcro sneaker.  Luckily for everyone reading MFS, Moda Operandi's Isabel Marant trunk show went live today where these boots are available for preorder and delivered straight to your door come Fall.  See the trunk show here and cut the line!

Paris Fashion Week AW13: Alexander Wang's Debut Collection for Balenciaga

March 5, 2013

The AW13 Balenciaga show was newly appointed Creative Director Alexander Wang's first collection for the brand.  Despite mixed review, I quite liked the show especially because it was very much a reflection of Balenciaga as a brand.  The collection was black and white (very Alexander Wang) but with intricately structured pieces and classic silhouettes that only a luxury fashion house can achieve with credibility.  Alexander Wang is known for his own sportswear line often filled with drapery. This show was a departure from what we normally see from him in a positive way.

Style.com's video recap I included above I think critiqued the show very well.  Take a look and let me know, what do you think about Alexander Wang's debut collection?

Designer Profile: Helmut Lang Short Suit

March 2, 2013

So I know its Paris Fashion Week at the moment (and I will be posting soon on my favorite shows), but I just had to highlight Helmut Lang's short suit from the SS13 show as it is hitting stores soon.  We all know the Helmut Lang brand as edgy, urban cool.  But this specific look takes all that to a whole new level for me.  Printed suits for one and with shorts for two!  It's all about modernizing classic pieces and this fresh look is my choice for SS13 designer fashion.

London Fashion Week AW13 Recap

February 23, 2013

I finally had the time to sit down and digest all of London Fashion Week to share with you!  My first time covering LFW officially for Mouthful of Style was such a great experience.  I have worked fashion shows and backstage many times in my career in the industry and now covering them as well as a fashion blogger adds even more to my overall experience. For one thing, I was able to see and appreciate the full production of the shows from start to finish.  When you work a show these parts can get overlooked as you are dashing around to make sure all is in place when the clock hits time. That being said, below are my favorite show looks of the week and a few pictures I snapped from backstage and the runways.  Enjoy!

Antonio Berardi

Emilio de la Morena

Tom Ford (is back on the runways!)

Model of the moment, Cara Delevingne

Backstage beauty

P.S.  I want to dedicate this post to one of my best friends on her wedding day.  Sending you the biggest kiss and a lifetime of happiness to you both!

London Fashion Week: Zoe Jordan AW13

February 18, 2013

I've definitely been running around London over the past few days, but in a good way!  London Fashion Week premiered at 10am on Friday at Somerset House with Zoe Jordan sponsored by Vestiaire Collective and I got the best view from front and center first row!  Having heard of the designer but not too familiar with her work, I am now a follower and fan! The show was a mix of some of my favorite styles and trends: matchy-matchy tops and trousers, structured jackets, silk mixed with rougher fabrics and fun pops of color.  An extremely wearable collection staying consistent to Zoe's signature style she describes as "feminine swagger."  Ah, don't you even just love that description!

New York Fashion Week AW13 Recap

February 15, 2013

Living in NYC for years before moving to London, I have a very strong affinity towards the power woman look.  The AW13 fashion shows were a dream to me with so many new ways to celebrate the NY-woman.  Honestly, these are just A FEW of my favorite looks from the shows (also loving Victoria Beckham, Rag & Bone, Theyskens Theory...).

The new tiny waisted power suit.

Femininity exuding strength.

Give me that blue dress now!  And I love the barely there midriff.  So commanding.

lasgodivas by The PR Series

February 12, 2013

With only a few more days of NY Fashion Week left, I wanted to introduce a new favorite NY-based jewelry label The PR Series. Above is one of my favorite pieces from the new collection titled lasgodivas. Named after the famed Godiva chocolate these custom made earrings ooze downtown ruggedness meets uptown glamour, my all-time favorite combination in styling.  Speaking to the designer Pili, she explained her "fascination with geometric shapes and mosaics" in creating this piece.  As for me, well, I just am fascinated by The PR Series.

For more on The PR Series see here and on lasgodivas see here.

Designer Spotlight: SUNO

January 17, 2013

Spring is around the corner (or at least that is what I keep telling myself as the weather just dropped significantly in London and snow is on the horizon tomorrow)!  My newest discovery with womenswear label SUNO has my eye happily focused on Spring.  My obsession with my favorite trends of 2012 (see post here) continues with SUNO's SS13 collection.  Peplum and silk blouses (PJ-inspired obvi) along with tailored jackets to give an edge will be my look this Spring.  See more from SUNO available soon at NET-A-PORTER

London Fashion Week: Menswear A/W '13

January 10, 2013

Inspirations“Texan oil baron, "a local hero", Shetland.”

Inspiration: "It's a show that is inspired by all things John Waters and a special interest in marquetry."

Inspiration: "Being young, living and growing up in the Hebrides, exiled in the most remote corner of the British Isles inspired the AW13 collection."

Signatures: "Innovative, functional and fun."

The second ever London Fashion Week for men's collections ended yesterday.  The city is still buzzing from the shows and my picks of the best looks are above.  First impression: Baggy pants ruled the runway.  A mix of classic British elegance with double-breasted jackets as seen at E.Tautz and modern street style at Christopher Raeburn were my favorites.  Tomorrow I am off to Milan for Milan Fashion Week.  More men's show coverage to come.

Designer Spotlight: Lady Grey

November 19, 2012

New York-based Lady Grey is one if not my favorite upcoming jewelry line.  And I swear I am not biased by having met the line's ultra-sweet designer and co-founder Jill Martinelli.  The jewelry speaks for itself.  I find fascinating the balance between hardness and femininity in each piece.  This duality in design is probably due to the fact that Jill and her design partner/co-founder Sabine Le Guyader both have degrees in metalworking.  How cool is that!  Above are my favorite pieces from their Darklands FW'12 collection available at Elizabeth Charles and Lady Grey online

I sat down with Jill to discuss Lady Grey as well as her style inspirations and learnings as a designer.

Tell me about the line Lady Grey.
The line is named after Lady Jane Grey with whom we found inspiration from her doomed story as the short-lived Queen of England from July 10-19, 1553 ("The Nine Days' Queen"). After graduating from school, Sabine and I decided to create a line together that combined a fashion-forward approach to jewelry with our conceptual ideas about adornment.

Who are your style icons?
Crystal Gayle and Lizzy Mercier Descloux.

What skill do you believe is necessary for success as a designer?
Perfectionism, but let yourself get a little weird once in a while.  Don't take yourself too seriously.
